Tantalising tulips in the garden at Wardington House

“It is the sweet simple things in life which are the real ones after all”

(Quote by Laura Ingalls Wilder)

Welcome to Wardington House’s latest newsletter

If the garden at Wardington House was a sweet shop it would offer the most exquisite selection of mouth watering treats. The beautiful bubbly blossom looks like the fluffiest candy floss, the variety of colourful tulips are like fabulous flavoured lollipops – strawberries and cream, rhubarb and custard, sherbet lemon; the peonies buds like the most scrumptious gobstoppers and the silky white draping bride like softest moreish marshmallows.

The sheer simple beauty at Wardington House this Spring is very much real and certainly is adding sweetness to everyone’s day.

Activities

As Spring got into full flow we carried on our activities based on this stunning season. The residents created some ‘sweet’ little spring crafts including blossom trees, colourful quirky sheep and miniature wheelbarrows

Of course there was plenty of sweetness around at Easter. Each resident woke up to a mini Easter bucket filled with chocolate eggs and Easter themed decorations. Due to the cooler weather Easter egg hunts were enjoyed by the residents inside the house. Some children hunted for chocolate eggs outside and the residents enjoyed watching them run excitedly around the lawn.

A sweet slice of cake was also enjoyed at the St George’s Day Coffee Morning. Did you know that apparently St George never stepped a foot on English soil! This was one of the conversation points of the morning.

From sweet to slithery – Zoolab visited with their array of exotic creatures. The residents enjoyed an afternoon listening to interesting facts about the creatures whilst touching and holding the animals if they wished.

Big Breakfast Update

Thank you once again to everyone that helped and brought food, raffle tickets and donated at the Big Breakfast. We raised a super £794.85! This money will go to the charity Refuge to support the marvellous work they do.

Emma’s Update

“What a glorious April we’ve had! Everywhere you look there is something new to see: tulips in so many colours and shapes popping up all over the place; beautiful and elegant Wisteria on the front of the house; carpets of phlox; masses of orange and red on the flowering quinces; glorious swathes of blue forget-me-nots; grape hyacinths; blue bells and brunnera; pink apple and cherry blossom; purple lilac flowers.

The grass looks greener, the sky looks bluer, and even the dandelion yellow flowers look like tempting treats especially if you are a bumblebee. The birds are busy making nests and their calls are even more enchanting than usual.

This month we’ve treated the lawn with a weed and feed and then scarified. Consequently it’s not looking its best at the moment but grass is made of tough stuff and will soon bounce back, better than ever, despite its recent ordeal.

As April showers have been cancelled this year we have been busy with the hose reels, sprinklers and watering cans. Plants are so wonderfully varied, some plants thrive in hot sunny conditions, requiring little attention and others are overly dramatic in their wilting when requiring

water and make me feel like a terrible gardener. Thankfully after a good drink they quickly perk up and all is forgiven but then the cycle is repeated in another area of the garden with a different plant and so on and so on.

The Month Ahead

The beginning of the month is of course May Day so our activities will be focussed on this fun day.

Lucia’s Tiny Farm will be visiting on Friday the 2nd May at 1.45pm which is always a joy.

Our activities will then focus on VE DAY especially with it being the 80th anniversary – the house will be decorated and an afternoon tea will take place to mark the occasion.

With Kangaroo Care Day this month we will be leaping our activities across to Australia (obviously not literally). With their interesting creepy crawlies and World Bee Day this month our theme will be insects.

Hopefully the weather will be on our side to get out in the garden to visit our brilliant Bug Hotel.

National Doughnut week will also be taking place so we will be having a go at making our own as well as having a doughnut themed coffee morning.

The following regular activities will also take place this month: singing with Tristan Pate and Katie Holland; Exercise Class with Alfie; Bonnie the Dog visit; afternoon tea at Harley Equestrian Cafe and in-house Church Services.
