Specialist dementia care

A home dedicated to dementia care

For over 60 years, we have helped people with dementia to lead fulfilling, dignified lives in a calm, comfortable, homely environment.

Every resident at Wardington House has dementia. The focus on caring for people with dementia means that our entire approach—our staff training, daily routines, and environment – is designed specifically to meet the changing needs of each person.

A home that uses no routine tranquillising medication

We use no routine tranquillising medication. Instead, we provide an environment where people can be free to safely go where they like in the house and gardens. We have high staffing levels and build trust between residents and staff and respect every individual’s choices. The absence of tranquillising medication helps residents remain more alert, mobile and engaged in daily life. Most new residents arrive at Wardington House on sedative medication from other settings. Within a few months, the majority are tranquilliser-free — a change often described by families as “transformational.”

Personalised, flexible care

We understand that no two people are the same. Before a new resident arrives at Wardington House our team takes time to get to know each resident’s history, interests and routines. Whether someone likes being sociable or prefers time on their own, we offer a choice of rooms and plan their care to make them feel safe, valued and comfortable.

Freedom and independence

Freedom is at the very centre of our philosophy of care. Residents are free to move around our home and gardens as they wish. There are no locked doors and mealtimes are flexible too.

The freedom helps residents maintain their mobility, confidence and a sense of purpose. Doors remain open all the time unless it is dark, raining or very windy, allowing residents to enjoy the fresh air and beautiful views.

Experienced nursing team

Matron leads our team of registered nurses. The nursing team has a wide range of expertise and a depth of experience that enables them to identify residents’ needs and provide the most appropriate care in a timely way. As well as dementia residents will encounter the frailaties of old age and these often need expert timely care. Many of our registered nurses have been members of the Wardington House staff team for over a decade, offering continuity and familiar faces. This helps residents feel secure.

We work closely with GPs and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive support, including end-of-life care when needed. Only two residents have died in hospital in the last ten years — a testament to the quality and continuity of nursing care we provide.

We do not use any agency staff.

Activities to enjoy

Our activities team offer a range of meaningful experiences, from music, theatre, trips out in our minibus, and a lovely garden for residents to enjoy whenever they like. Families often tell us how much they value the relaxed atmosphere and how it has helped their loved ones thrive.
