“The rising sun, and on the plains descend;
Yet art thou welcome, welcome as a friend”
(‘To a Snowdrop’, William Wordsworth)
Welcome to Wardington House’s latest newsletter
The wonderful, white sight of the snowdrops is delightfully mesmerising at Wardington House, this time of year. For those residents who prefer to stay in the warmth of the home, some snowdrops have been picked and shared around, bringing satisfied smiles to all.
Does the delicate beauty of the snow drops make you smile or is it knowing that the snowdrops presence promises that Spring is on the way? Whilst Wordsworth writes of the snowdrops being welcomed as a friend, we certainly will also be welcoming the warmer weather at Wardington House, as I’m sure you will too.
The sheer simple beauty at Wardington House this Spring is very much real and certainly is adding sweetness to everyone’s day.
Activities
These cold wintery days have not stopped the heart warming, fun inside at Wardington House.
Luica’s Tiny Farm always creates a bubbly, busy atmosphere. The array of friendly animals are wonderful for snuggling up to or creating curiosity amongst the residents.
Painting is always available and enjoyed throughout the year here at Wardington House. Groups of residents have been using watercolour paints to paint wintery themed wildlife pictures. The colourful conversation and creativity amongst some of the residents was heartwarming for everyone.
A less colourful activity but still fun for some was the fake snow. Some residents were quite intrigued, whereas others were not over eager to experience something cold and wet in their hands “that is meant to be outside”. The snowman building may have to remain outside in the future.
Hot chocolate is a sweet warming treat, especially enjoyed this time of year. It definitely went down a treat at the Winter Themed Coffee morning with many residents indulging in two cups!
We are always guaranteed to feel thoroughly toasty, especially our toes, after an afternoon of dancing and toe tapping to some African Drumming with In2Culture.
Snowdrop Scenes
Hope you enjoy some of the snowdrop scenes as the sun starts to set at Wardington House.
“January is seen as a month for a new beginning, the start of the next cycle.
This starts in Wardington with the snow drops, one or two at first then quickly, almost before your very eyes there is a carpet of white, like a light dusting of snow. The hellebores, commonly called the Christmas Rose also make an appearance and together provide much needed cheer in what can be, for many, a long and dreary month.
January is a great month for pruning whilst the shrubs and trees are dormant and provides good structure for the coming year’s flowers and fruits. We have made a good start on the apples, roses and wisteria. This is a great fun job so long as you don’t mind the cold, thorns or ladders.
We have also added to our fruit tree collection, planting six new ones including a red/purple skinned pear called Sensation and an apple tree named Core Blimey. Hopefully they will all be tasty varieties and I for one can’t wait to try them.”
The Month Ahead
Did you know National Pizza Day is on the 9th February…then Valentine’s Day on the 14th. Pizza and romance (romantic cities in particular) lend themselves nicely to the theme ‘Italy’, at the start of this month.
There are many interesting people, (Christopher Columbus, Julius Caesar, Galileo Galilei), famous artists, (Leonardo Davinci, Raphael, Michelangelo) architecture, places, food, sports and songs we can have a lot of fun with!
The week commencing the 14th February is National Nest Box week. We have lots of lovely birds and many bird lovers here at Wardington House, so we will be decorating nest boxes as well as doing activities based around birds.
The 1st of March is Saint David’s day. In the build up to this day we will be doing activities based on Wales, including making some delicious Welsh Cakes.
The following regular activities will also take place this month: singing with Tristan Pate and Katie Holland; Exercise Class with Alfie; Bonnie the Dog visit; afternoon tea at Harley Equestrian Cafe and in-house Church Services.
