The flowers on the lawn, loving the sunshine.

Here comes the sun, doo-doo-doo,

Here comes the sun,

And I say, “It’s all right”.

(Here Comes the Sun, by The Beatles)

Welcome to Wardington House’s latest newsletter.

If flowers could sing they would all be singing the gorgeous, good-feeling song, Here Comes the Sun, by The Beatles at the top of their lungs at the moment. The sunny weather has been glorious and the garden is really coming to life with colour and beauty. It is super seeing some of the residents exploring outside on their own casual agenda, enjoying the serene atmosphere. It really is a place where you can let out a big sigh and say “It’s all right”.

Activities

Though the sun did not make much of an appearance during Easter it did not hold us back – Easter egg hunts took place in the house and there was some wonderful creative crafting taking place.

The Easter Service was egg-cellent with readings and prayers read out by the residents. Many joined in the singing of the hymns, especially the well known ones – Thine be thy Glory and Lord of the Dance. Thank you to everyone who came along.

Another big thank you to all the staff who sent in photos of their pets for our ‘pet’ theme. Hopefully you all got a glance of all our wonderful furry
friends’ photos in the main sitting room. They brought a lot of joy to everyone!

A few residents ventured out to Crofts, the local pet store but unfortunately all the rabbits, bunnies and hamsters had been sold over the Easter holidays! We had a browse over the fish then enjoyed a cuppa and cake in Marks and Spencers instead.

Towards the end of the month some typically English lemon drizzle cakes and Victoria sponges were devoured at our St George’s Day Coffee morning. Also, many of us soaked up the sun rays and enjoyed a typically English ice cream from the ice cream van – an idyllically delicious English afternoon!

Some residents enjoyed combining the sun and our crafting skills by painting some super sun catchers. See if they catch your eye next time you visit.

Emma’s Update

“In April we have felt all four seasons and on some occasions, all in one day! On one side of the house or a hedge, in the sunshine and sheltered from the wind, it can feel like shorts, T-shirts and suncream weather, but only a few meters away, in the wind and shade, the weather calls for woolly hats and coats! Certainly, if you are looking to sit out in the garden choose your spot wisely.

A peony still looking stunning despite the testing weather.

The lack of rain and the many strong breezy days have really dried out the garden and weeding the concrete like ground is difficult. The best way I’ve found to overcome this is to water the bed the day before and the weeds pop right out.

I’ve been feeling a bit lonely without Kevin (Assistant Gardener) around for most of the month, so I have been focusing on getting all the basic everyday jobs done like keeping the grass cut, caring for the chickens, watering and keeping all my seedlings healthy and growing. Any time left after that has been dedicated to the most pressing spring jobs, such as tying in all of the new growth on the climbing roses and putting out plant supports.

The tulips really have been the star of the show looking bright and jewel like wherever you look. The bluebells followed close behind with seas of blue and also the fruit tree blossom, filling the trees with fluffy pinks and whites.

Terrific tulips on display all around the outside of the house and being prepared for inside the house.

On your garden wanderings make sure you check out the wisteria flowering on the front of the house and if you come across a lilac tree in flower do pop your nose in and enjoy the beautiful perfume”.

The Month Ahead

With the sun now shining, bringing more joy and smiles, we thought we may add a little more happiness – especially as World Laughter Day takes place at the beginning of the month. Did you know laughter, even simulated laughter, strengthens your immune system, temporarily relieves pain and protects against the damaging effects of stress. Laughter will be our theme with a focus on experiences that make us laugh.

Amongst this theme National Doughnut week takes place, so we will have a morning of making and decorating doughnuts as well as a Coffee Morning with delicious doughnuts on the 20th May.

Did you know that the 20th May is also dedicated to those all important brilliant bees – World Bee Day. For the rest of the month our activities will be focussed around bees. We will be painting bee houses, making honey sandwiches, planting some plants and also enjoying walks to see our own bees who have lived here for over 30 years!

There also are a variety of other activities taking place which will create some smiles and chuckles.
On Tuesday, 5th May at 1.30pm we have Mini Moments Ponies joining us with their two ponies who stand no higher than 32 inches! This is their first visit and we can’t wait!

On Friday, 8th May you may see Union Jack Flags dotted about the house for VE day. We will be having an afternoon tea with party food to celebrate this occasion.

Saturday, 16th May will be a date to remember for the football fans amongst us, as the FA Cup final takes place. The French Open Tennis tournament then starts a couple of days later on the 18th.

Lucia’s Tiny Farm will be back to visit us on the afternoon of the 22nd May. Then for something that I’m sure will make many chuckle – we have some Alpacas visiting us at 1.30pm on Friday 29th May.

The following regular activities will also take place this month: singing with Tristan Pate (weekly) and Katie Holland (monthly); Exercise Classes with Alfie (fortnightly); Josie the PAT dog (fortnightly); afternoon tea at Harley Equestrian Cafe (monthly); morning coffee and cake at Wardington Garden Centre (fortnightly); in-house Church Services (weekly) and Pamper Mornings.
