“Now, I shout it from the highest hills
Even told the golden daffodils”
(Secret Love, performed by Doris Day in Calamity Jane)

Welcome to Wardington House’s latest newsletter

It certainly isn’t a secret how much we are loving the wonderful colours that are starting to surround Wardington House. We may not have the ‘Black Hills of Dakota’ but the gorgeous Oxfordshire countryside certainly looks amazing with the stunning sun rises and sunsets this time of year. Have you seen your first daffodil of the year yet? There are a few golden glows appearing amongst the snowdrops here, looking like they are shouting from the highest hills “Spring is on its way!”

Activities

On Valentine’s Day each resident woke up to a little pouch of heart shaped chocolates for them to enjoy throughout the day. They were then greeted with an array of heart decorations in the main sitting room. To add to the atmosphere some residents then enjoyed creating flower arrangements, with roses of course.

The residents’ love for Italian food was no secret when an Italian themed afternoon tea took place. The food was disappearing from the plates before a photo could be taken to show the delicious selection they enjoyed! Savoury and sweet Italian goodies were devoured whilst listening to Italian music. Bellissimo!

Some residents have also been busy contributing to National Nest Box week by decorating some pre-made bird houses. Some residents choose to use foliage from the garden whilst others choose to use some bright and bold paint.

At the end of the month we moved back across Europe to celebrate St David’s Day. A coffee-morning with welsh cakes and music by Tom Jones was a ‘da’ way to start the day.

Emma’s Update

“After the long month of January, February practically rushes by. Buds are starting to form, bulbs are popping up all over, spring feels imminent.

We’ve given the green house its annual clean in preparation for seed sowing. Any of you lucky enough to have a green house know the glass has a habit of slipping down over time and cracking in bad weather. It is a difficult and fiddly job – refitting the glass, but Kevin has done a wonderful job.

We have also been working down in the bottom garden, pulling out the early weeds, neatening up the grass edging with a half moon and then mulching them for the first time with our very own compost.

Winter is a great time to appreciate the buildings and setting of Wardington House. If the house is the canvas, then the plants are the paint and what a beautiful and interesting canvas it is for me to paint on. There are so many intricate details: cupolas, pillars, arches, carvings in stone, a bell, pretty shaped windows, the list goes on. Next time you are here, have a look around, the character and history of the home starts revealing itself everywhere you look.”

The Month Ahead

On your marks…get set..yes it is the annual Wardington House Pancake Race! I should actually say ‘races’ as this year there will be a morning and afternoon race. The race is a lot of fun and the weather looks to be good so why not have it twice – double the fun!

From fast feet to fast cars…some volunteers from the British Motor Museum with their wonderful memorabilia will be visiting on the 6th March at 1.30pm.

Crufts will also be taking place early this month and with so many animal lovers at Wardington House the theme ‘Household Pets’ I’m sure will be fondly welcomed. A visit to the local pet shop will take place and Lucia’s Tiny Farm will also be visiting us on the morning of the 13th March.

The Green Sitting Room is the perfect venue to celebrate St Patrick’s Day this month. We will be holding an afternoon tea to celebrate this occasion.

Then, yes it’s here! The 20th March is officially the first day of Spring! The activities will be based around this wonderful season. We will start this theme by making and decorating some lemon shortbread biscuits then enjoy them at the spring themed coffee morning.

Friday 28th March is National Skipping Day…I’m sure with Spring in the air some of us will definitely have a spring in our step and be up for some skipping activities.

As well as Mothering Sunday on the 30th March, remember to change your clocks.

We will then round up this busy month with some tranquil tunes from the Bodicote Bellringers at 2pm on the 31st March.

The following regular activities will also take place this month: singing with Tristan Pate and Katie Holland; Exercise Class with Alfie; Bonnie the Dog visit; afternoon tea at Harley Equestrian Cafe and in-house Church Services.
